Getting in shape for summer

It feels like you’re being good to your pet to give it extra food, but all too often this leads to overweight pets -something your pet won’t thank you for. It is a very common problem, with as many as 40% of dogs and 33% of cats classed as obese. An easy way to test if an animal is overweight is if you have difficulty feeling their ribs through the coat. Many owners don’t recognize that their pet is overweight, while other know there is a problem but are not aware of the health risks of obesity. Increased weight also increases the risk of diseases like diabetes, as well as putting extra pressure on arthritic joints and
struggling hearts.
There is also an increase in anaesthetic risk due to breathing difficulty under all that fat - so do your pet a favour: stick to set meals, with treats for training deducted from meals. Take advantage of the longer sunshine hours and warmer weather to go for a walk together - it will keep you both in shape.

Tips to help your pet lose weight:

• Replace part of the diet with veggies and brown rice
• Get a smaller food bowl
• Be aware of the amount you are feeding: use a measuring cup or scales.
• Use a premium food "light diet" which has reduced calories to help your pet lose weight without leaving them hungry.
• Increase the duration and frequency of exercise
• Weigh your pet regularly to keep a record of progress.
• Staff can keep notes on your hospital file.
Remember to count snack/treats into the diet

Be patient: it takes a while to notice a difference!
